IF YOU GO DOWN TO FREO ON WEDNESDAY, YOU'RE IN FOR A BIG SURPRISE!
Don't be surprised if you see chooks in the Cappuccino Strip, market stalls
in the middle of Market Street, bellydancers, bicycles - even an open-air
lounge-room!
It's Shed Your Car Day, Wednesday September 19, and there's lots of fun in
store! Why not come to Fremantle and join in the fun?
Cappuccino Strip Car-free!
South Terrace-Market Street (from High Street to Norfolk Street) will be
closed to private vehicles and buses from 6.30am to 6.30pm. Access will be
available for emergency vehicles, cyclists and delivery vehicles.
Once the streets have been closed, the community will reclaim the streets
with a range of exciting events, including:
- Bike to Breakfast (6.30am - 9am)
Cycle to Fremantle city centre and enjoy breakfast from 6.30am till 9am. From the stall on the corner of Collie St and South Terrace, the first three hundred cyclists will receive a voucher for a coffee and muffin (or equivalent to the value of $5) at one of the four participating cafés - Gino's, Dome, Old Papa's and the Mill Bakehouse. Supported by the Department of Planning & Infrastructure’s Cycle Instead program. After brekky check out the bike displays and get a bike safety check courtesy of Mercer's Cycles.

- In The Lounge Room (9am - 2pm)
Stretch the mind with a philosophical debate, relax over a game of chess or mahjong, or stretch out with tai chi or yoga.
- Green Street (after 6.30am until around 3.30 pm)
From 6.30am, a magical "urban garden" will take shape in the middle of South Terrace, complete with shady trees, pond and chooks. Constructed by a team from the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers, with help from City Farm and the Permaculture Centre.... Here is a place to enjoy some peace and quiet in the heart of town, have a lunchtime picnic, and enjoy storytelling, poetry readings and peaceful music.
- Story-telling (10am - 10.30am)
Grant Cottrell, master storyteller, will enthrall his audience with his
tales. Especially suited to school children, but adults will love Grant's
stories too! Come on down to "Green Street" and hear Grant.
- Story-telling (11.30am - 12.00pm)

- Musical Duo (11.15am - 11.45pm)
Music to bring a smile to your face :-)
- Choir (12pm - 12.30pm)
East Fremantle Primary School Choir will perform a few numbers for the
crowds. Join them in the garden on South Terrace.
- Chalk Mural (10am - 2pm)
Horatio T. Birdbath - with help from friends - will create a wonderful
community chalk drawing on the Cappuccino Strip near Simmo's! Primary
school children are welcome to join in!
- Live Radio Broadcast by Radio Fremantle (8.30am - 3.00pm)
Broadcasting live from Interfoods. Radio Fremantle - Top of the Dial 107.9
fm - will have a range of stimulating interviews and great music!
The prize-draw for the Transperth WorkPlace Challenge is scheduled to go to air
from 12.30.
- Health and Environment Expo (9am - 2pm)
The Health and Environment Expo will be held in Market Street, with
information stalls by groups like SmogBusters and the Heart Foundation.

- Workplace Challenge Award - Involving local businesses and organisations and sponsored by Transperth. The challenge will encourage employees to walk, cycle or take public transport to and from work on the day. Organisations with the greatest rate of participation will receive an award. Spot prizes may also be given to participating employees. Award ceremony to be held at the 12.30pm in the Lounge on cappuccino strip.

- Skate and Mountain Bike Demonstrations (10am - 5pm)
Come along and enjoy the expert antics of our skate board and mountain-bike
demonstration team. They will be giving demonstrations at various times
near the corner of Essex Street and South Terrace.
- Skate demos between 10 - 12 and 2 - 4.
- Mountain bike demos between 10.30 - 12.30 and 2.30 - 4.30.
- Slow Bike Race (Collie St, 4pm)
Get set to get the giggles as the judges determine who can pedal backwards best in the Slow Bike Race. Sponsored by Cycling Promotion Fund and Fleet Cycles.

- Reclaim The Streets" parade (Henderson Street Mall, 5.15pm)
Join in the colour and spectacle as the famous Freo Samba lead a parade to
reclaim the streets, in a fitting end to a wonderful car-free day.

- Environmental monitoring - to assess the benefits of a car-free day in Fremantle. Also includes a lunch-time presentation by Peter Dingle and East Freo Primary School will present 'Airwatch' performance.

Road Closures
Bus services that normally run in South Terrace (Routes 98, 99, 126, 135,
136, 138, 141, 144, 145, 510, 920 and the Fremantle CAT service) will be
detoured during the road closures. Northbound buses will detour via Parry
Street, with a temporary stop near the Fremantle Markets. Outbound buses
will detour via Phillimore Street, Mouat Street, Marine Terrace and Norfolk
Street with a temporary stop near Croke Street. Parking will be banned on
the east side of Mouat Street to assist bus movements.
