Shed Your Car Day - Fremantle : Wednesday 19 September 2001

Shed Your Car Day in Fremantle aims to encourage people to use alternative ways to get in, and around Fremantle, in order to promote the environmental, health and social benefits of reduced car use in the community.

Fremantle residents, commuters and visitors will be encouraged to shed their cars on Wednesday 19 September and experience the benefits of walking, cycling or using public transport.

The Fremantle event will establish Fremantle as a community which has a real commitment to creating a more socially and environmentally sustainable place to live, work and play.

As in other car-free days throughout the world, a section of the Fremantle city area will be closed to private vehicles for the day. A range of entertaining events throughout the day will help people experience the benefits of a quieter, cleaner, safer Fremantle.

2001 Success!

Shed Your Car Day 2001 was a tremendous success, with a great range of events and participation from the local community, plus a beautiful early spring day.

The Day started at 6.30am with Bike to Breakfast and as we woke up we watched parts of the street transformed into a Lounge Room complete with brazier and Garden Strip with chooks!

The crowds just continued to grow, strolling through the enviro markets, past the skate expo, viewed the corporate Workplace Challenge awards and cheered the Slow Bike Race. Check out our photos to get a taste of the day!
