Shed Your Car Day - Fremantle : Wednesday 19 September 2001
Fremantle residents, commuters and visitors will be encouraged to shed their cars on Wednesday 19 September and experience the benefits of walking, cycling or using public transport.
The Fremantle event will establish Fremantle as a community which has a real commitment to creating a more socially and environmentally sustainable place to live, work and play.
As in other car-free days throughout the world, a section of the Fremantle city area will be closed to private vehicles for the day. This will encompass Market street from the junction with High Street to South Terrace and South Terrace from Market Street to Norfolk Street. The area will be closed from 6:30am to 6:30pm with access restricted to authorised service vehicles, and emergency vehicles.
There will be extra bicycle racks available, and people will be encouraged to walk, cycle, skate and make use of the new Fremantle City Council CAT buses and other forms of public transport.
A number of events will take place on the day, which will draw people into the car-free city area.
